This project has it's roots in our enjoyment of Jerry Jeff Walker but truly is about the people we've met as the result of that interest.
Everyone here is connected (in some way) to Jerry Jeff.
One degree - artists introduced to us directly by Jerry Jeff. These folks wrote songs that JJ has recorded or played with JJ at some point.
Two degrees - artists introduced to us by First Degree artists and/or through our association with the folks who frequent the Yahoo Group formerly knows as the Jerry Jeff List.
Three degrees - well, you get the drift.
ONE DEGREE
BOB LIVINGSTON
Bob Livingston has never been a traditional Texas country musician even though he's spent more than his share of time on the roadhouse circuit with some of Texas' most colorful musicians. He grew up in Lubbock and moved to Austin in 1971 after playing on Michael Murphey's album Geronimo's Cadillac. He has ties to Jerry Jeff Walker (legend has it that he introduced JJW to 'Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother'), and the Lost Gonzo Band but Bruce Kidder (KYHI) says "It's great to hear an album from an Austin musician that doesnt revolve around frat boy patronization. No beer references, no hollerin' Texas, no roadtrip offering. Read more...Click to visit his website...
FREDDY 'STEADY' KRC
From Austin to Prague, from San Francisco to London, Freddie 'Steady' Krc has plied his musical trade for more than thirty years. Despite his travels, Krc has made Austin his home where, in addition to his long time gig with Jerry Jeff Walker, he's done session work with the likes of B.W. Stevenson, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Carole King and Roger Waters as well as several versions of his own band. Only in Austin could you find someone (like Krc) drumming in a cowboy club with Jerry Jeff one night then singingin a punk rock club with the Explosives the next.
JOHN INMON
From Blind Lemon Jefferson to T-Bone Walker, to Eric Johnson, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughn the Lone Star State has always been a hotbed of string bending guitar wizards.
Though he is far too self-effacing to ever put himself in such august company, John Inmon fits seamlessly into that six-string continuum.
His peers know John as one of the finest guitarists in Austin. His fans know him as the signature guitar style that has, at one time or another, propelled the music of Townes Van Zandt, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely, Delbert McClinton, Marcia Ball, Omar and the Howlers, the Lost Gonzo Band, Pat Green, Michael Martin Murphy, Keith Sykes and most famously, Jerry Jeff Walker.

GUY CLARK
Guy Clark doesn't just write songs, he crafts them with the kind of hands-on care and respect that a master carpenter (a favorite image of his) would have when faced with a stack of rare hardwood. He works slowly, but has produced an impressive collection of timeless gems, leaving very little waste behind. His connection here is as the author of (JJW standards) 'LA Freeway' and 'Desperados Waiting For a Train" but his influence runs much broader and deeper and he remains the kind of songwriter whom young artists study and seasoned writers (and listeners) admire. "Well I wish I was in Austin..."
WILLIS ALAN RAMSEY
Willis Alan Ramsey, a singer-songwriter with deep Texas roots, released his first and only album, called Willis Alan Ramsey, in 1972 On Leon Russell's Shelter Records label. Our connection is JJW's version of 'Northeast Texas Women' but no less than nine (of the eleven) songs on the album have been recorded by the likes of Lyle Lovett, Jimmy Buffett, Rusty Weir, Shawn Colvin, Waylon Jennings, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Sam Bush, David Bromberg and (who could forget) Captain and Tennille. You could argue that the covers have had more 'success' but nobody sings Willis Alan Ramsey like Willis Alan Ramsey. If you haven't heard, you should.

CHUCK PYLE
His songs have been recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, JOhn Denver, Chris LeDoux, Suzy Bogus and Jerry Jeff Walker, but nobody tells a story like Chuck Pyle. For the Zen Cowboy, the words and music are vehicles that transport us to other places (real and surreal) and insist that we enjoy the ride. His words get you thinking and challenge your senses to keep up.
When reviewers first gave him the 'Zen Cowboy' moniker, he decided to, as he says, "Always ride the horse in the direction it's going," and took the nickname to heart, shaving his head and blending his upbeat perspective with old-fashioned horse sense. He mixes infectiously hummable melodies with straignt-from-the-saddle poetry, quoting bumper stickers, proverbs, world leaders and old cowboys.

LLOYD MAINES
When you Google 'Lloyd Maines' you get more than 47,000 hits, most of them other artists websites. Born in Lubbock, now based in Austin, the Google results reflect his influence on the Texas music scene as a Grammy award-winning producer, musician and songwriter. His pedal steel, dobro, guitar, mandolin work and his production skills can be heard on the work of many of the artists on this list.

David Francey
(JJW - Ray Wylie Hubbard)
In July 2004, we headed for the Vancouver, BC Folk Festival, primarily as a chance to see Ray Wylie Hubbard (who doesn't get to the Northwest very often. We were introduced to a number of new (to us) artists and were taken immediately by the storytelling style of David Francey.

Tish Hinojosa
(JJW - Ray Wylie Hubbard)
We had just arrived in Austin for BDB and a week of music and BBQ. First night had a 'free' concert featuring Ray Wylie Hubbard at SW Texas State in Sam Markos. Drove the back way with the intention of stopping for BBQ at Kreuz's Market but it was closed. So was the Luling City market. Now it's getting late and we don't want to miss the show and we're 'hurrying' a little fast and got to meet aMartindale city policeman. So I get a speeding ticket and no BBQ and it's pouring down rain in San Marcos, but then things took a decided turn for the better.
Along with Ray Wylie Hubbard we were introduced to Ruthie Foster, Marcia Ball and Tish Hinojosa.
Gurf Morlix
Tempting as it may be, don't judge Gurf Morlix by the company he keeps even if it is a good starting point. His associations with Lucinda Williams, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Warren Zevon, Patty Griffin, Robert Earl Keen, Mary Gautier, Tom Russell, Jim Lauderdale, Slaid Cleaves (among others) reflect his reputation as a producer, guitarist and multi-instrumentalst but, instead, listen to Last Exit to Happyland, his fifth solo album which shows a similar level of excellence as a singer, songwriter and artist in his own right.

Three degrees
Rich Layton
(JJW-Dot.Compadres-Vince Bell)
We first met Rich Layton when Vince Bell invited him to a house concert. Turns out that Rich has played with a majority of the other artists on our Six Degrees list.
After college at UT, Rich began his serious musical schooling with songwriter Lucinda Williams, playing for tips on Austin street corners. When the couple moved to Houston, Rich became hous harp player for the inner city club that was home to Townes Van Zandt, Nancy Griffith, Lightning Hopkins and many other Texas luminaries. Eventually, friends encouragede him to step out and bring his powerful vocals and high-energy showmanship to center stage. Today, he and his band The Troublemakers are Portland's (OR) keepers of the flame for American roots music.

Adam Carroll
(JJW - Burritoville - Fred Eaglesmith)
We first heard Adam Carroll in Bellows Falls, VT on 'New Artists Night' at the 2004 Roots on the River and I spent the rest of the weekend singing "Girl With the Dirty Hair" much (I think) to Jan's dismay. His straightforward, unaffected storytelling reminds us that life can be (is)simultaneously sad and funny, mysterious and obvious, full of meanings and (perhaps) just to be lived.
Steve Circeo writes "His vocal style and wry wit immediately evoke comparisons with John Prine, but where Prine leans toward more political subject matter, Carroll tends to simply, and somewhat amusedly, report his observations on life.

Audrey Auld
(JJW - Guy Clark - Rachel Harrington)
Seattle based singer-songwriter Rachel Harrington said "you have to get this woman to play your house concert series." We were slow on the uptake and missed our chance that spring. Since then, we've heard Audrey open solo for Fred Eaglesmith and accompanied by Andrew Harding and I can say that Rachel was right. Audrey is a wordsmith extraordinaire, a fine story teller and entertainer.
